Greetings, I've bought two JBL LSR305 monitors because of the splendid reviews and indeed truly exceptional sound for the price, however today I noticed that the tweeters emit a continuous hissing noise which isn't really loud, yet still easily hearable from 1.5 metres in a room with a computer with five active fans running close to them (very different frequencies, but still).
I'm completely positive that I heard the noise right after taking them out of the boxes for the first time, however only when I put my ears close to the tweeters. Two days later, I'm hearing it all the time without doing anything special that could damage them. My M-Audio AV42 are completely silent.
After searching the web, I've found people complaining about the hiss, people who claim it isn't there and people who suggest all kinds of daft ‘solutions’ despite evidence clearly pointing elsewhere.
I took one of the speakers and connected it to three different 230V outlets with no other inputs and 50% volume and the hiss was there. It has nothing to do with my other equipment and nothing to do with audio cables.
If you have great theoretical knowledge or personal experience with these speakers, I'd be very grateful if you could comment on the issue. Do yours hiss as well? Is it a common trait for studio monitors? Can I do anything to reduce the noise?
Many thanks in advance!
(Lastly, forgive the annoyance, but I'm looking for opinions from people who know what they're talking about, not 13 years old self-proclaimed audiophiles with no technical skill and severe lack of theoretical knowledge. Cheers.)
Update (17 October): I've recorded the noise with my iPhone very close to the tweeter so that you can at least have a look at the spectrogram and make a relative comparison. It goes from -49 dB to -42 dB.
Update 2 (17 October): I'm going to talk to the retailer on Monday and enquire about the possibility of trying another speaker from a different batch, try a different building, etc. I'll keep you posted.
Update 3 (22 October): KRK Rokit 5 with Class-AB amplifiers do hiss as well, albeit the noise is less audible. On the other hand, they get rather hot and it looks like they're turning themselves off after some time. I can hear the hiss from about 0.5 metres. If you want your speakers to shut up, they might be better because they sound almost the same.
